It was a year ago that New Jersey became a state where fully legalized sports betting was available. Now, one year on and the numbers are in.
Apparently, the state booked $3B in bets (also known as the “handle”). FanDuel sportsbook netted $17.5M from their operation, making them the leader in profits for the state. Speaking of the state, New Jersey generated $22.6M in taxes from sports betting.
80%+ of New Jersey’s sports bets were booked using mobile devices. The ease of using of a mobile device makes placing bets a breeze. You can expect similar numbers from states where sports betting will be legalized.
Since November of 2018, every month has seen a handle booked of at least $300M. Basketball was the most popular sport to bet in New Jersey. It accounted for almost 1/3 of all bets taken. Of course, this has a lot to do with how available sports betting had become in the 2019 calendar year vs. the start of football season in 2018.
