Maine Looking to Legalize Sports Betting Today

Maine sports betting law

June 19th 2019

The legislature in Maine is working OT today to approve a measure that would legalize sports betting in the state. There are some caveats to this legalization of course.

  1. Betting on in-state teams would not be legal. This is no big deal as Maine has no professional sports and nobody bets on the University of Maine.
  2. Approved at limited number of locations. Namely, 11 specific locations: one racetrack, two casinos, four OTBs, and four tribal casinos.

After both houses approve the bill, Governor Janet Mills has to sign it into law.

Mobile betting will be allowed as well.

Steve Silver, a lawyer in Portland, Maine, and adjunct professor of gaming law at the University of Maine School of Law says: “Barring any surprises, the bill on track to pass now could be one of the greatest in the nation for both consumers and operators. It would be one of the few post-PASPA laws that embraces a free market concept meaning numerous licenses in terms of type and location, relatively low fees and taxes, no integrity fees, and no data mandates.”
